Do you feel anxious? I know I feel anxious at times. It’s usually when I’m feeling stressed out about something.

Everyone experiences a sense of anxiety at some point in their life. It can be caused by sleep deprivation, a career change, a move, raising children, work, illness, the list can go on and on.

As I mentioned most anxiety symptoms are triggered by stressful events. Although many believe anxiety to be a psychological disorder it is actually more of a physiological response to a hormone release or an imbalance.

Cortisol, adrenaline and norepinephrine are three hormones which are produced in the adrenal glands. These hormones are responsible for our fight or flight response.

Environmental, physical or emotional upsets can trigger the overproduction of anyone of these hormones. There are a lot of things you can do to lessen the or eliminate anxiety. Here are a few…

  • Eliminate caffeine: caffeine is a stimulant and can heighten symptoms of anxiety.
  • Yoga/meditation: both of these can take the focus off of stress and anxiety allowing you to relax your mind and body.
  • Sleep therapy: lack of sleep is often a warning sign of anxiety. It is often the lack of sleep that prolongs anxiety levels. So it is essential you are getting enough sleep.
  • Journaling: record daily events and activities. Note activities that trigger stress or anxiety or negative physical responses. (Like upset stomach, headache, etc.) After a week or two go through the entries and try to identify any major sources of stress or anxiety. By identifying the source you can take steps to avoid or prevent them in the future.
